The holiday festivities in Bishop Hill begin with Julmarknad, or Christmas Market, on November 23, 24, 25 and December 1st and 2nd. This event is based on Scandinavian customs dating back to the Middle Ages when farmers and artisans would gather in the village squares to sell their wares. Bishop Hill businesses will be offering unique gifts, handmade wares, antiques, quilts, collectibles, baked goods, delicious foods, and Swedish imports. Scandinavian foods such as herring, lutfisk, and rye bread are also in abundance.
A very popular part of Julmarknad is the Arts Council’s Chocolate Walk, held on the second weekend of the event. The first weekend of the event includes a Cookie Walk sponsored by the Bishop Hill Old Settlers’ Association. Wandering Swedish folk characters will roam the village to delight young and old alike. There will also be special music. Join the celebration.
